Hexham has a population of only 11000, and a charm that reflects it’s small size. Winner of the Britain in Bloom Award 2005, the Country Life Magazine named Hexham England’s Favourity Market Town. The town dates back to 674AD with the foundation of a monistary. The current Abbey at Hexham dates from 11th Century and is spectacular. Major attractions for the travelling visitor are Hadrian’s Wall, other Roman Ruins nearby, the oldest Gaol in England housing a museum. The Roman Fort of Vindolanda is a must visit for students of ancient history.
